Todays workplace puts forward many challenges for workers.     • 2.2 million people believe they were suffering from work related illness
    • 2037 people died from Mesothelioma (asbestos related cancer) in 2005 alone. Many other from work related lung diseases and cancers.

    • 241 people died due to accident at work in 2006/07
    • 141350 employee injuries were reported
    • 274000 injuries occurred in 2006/07 which were reportable
  • Loss of workdays
    • 36 million days lost due to work related illness
    • 6 million due to accidents at work

Health and social care industry sits at the top of the table with the most number of incidents, back injuries and upper limb disorder is where most workers suffer injuries. Half of the British workers reported that they had to handle harmful substances and carry out manual handing at work. Agriculture, construction and manufacturing industries are the ones with highest number of fatalities.

Musculoskeletal disorders, slipping and tripping, and stress were the three most commonly reported health and safety risks by employers in Britain.
